Body language

Body language is the way the character is positioned to the audience, it is their actions , their movements and the way they present themselves.The body language helps us to understand who they are and how they will be represented.

&facial expressions

Facial expressions is the way the characters emotions are portrayed to the audience. It is the look on their face and the meaning this creates to the audience.The facial expressions can tell you a lot about the type of character they are and how they express themselves.

Here's are examples

 

His body language is quite sharp also looks serious and fearless.

However from his facial expression you can see abit of fear in his eyes.

His body language is quite sharp ,he looks confident , brave and powerful. we can tell this by the way his standing and how his holding the sword .

His facial expression is quite serious looking , like he wants to get the job done , no time for messing around.In a way he looks abit angry this helps the audience understand how his feeling.

 

From her facial expressions i can that she looks well scared/shocked , i can tell this by the way her eyes kinda pop out and her mouth is opened.

Her body language is slightly defencive , she looks weak and she's standing in an angle.
From her facial expression we can see that she looks shocked and scared from her eyes ,looks like shes looking at something.

In this image you can't really his body language but from his facial expression he looks quite scary and the also his wearing that mask to stop him from eating people which shows that his sick in the head.

Definition of Iconography 

The objects that you see in the scene, the meaning that these objects create to the scene.

when analysing the trailer 2012, there was so many iconography that made the film more exciting.

-Cars are used for;

escape

speed (chase)

may show wealth!

- Tall buildings;you mainly would find them in action films , for them to get destroyed!

- Trees represent life!

- Jet ;safety again shows wealth.

-Fire ;danger.

sea- shows power

when thinking about a thriller iconography we as the audience straight away think of weapons such as knives

as knives associates with blood , death and pain However there are other weapons used but the knives are the typical iconography when it comes to thrillers.

These iconographys are conventional to thriller films ,as they are so common.

Examples from the existing film 'Scream'

In this film the girl (protagonist) is using the knive to protect herself from the antagonist , from this the audience get some sort of feeling of danger about to occur.

The phone was the most significant iconography in the film 'scream' because it lead to the girls death therefore a certain iconography can have so much meaning to it and is there  for a particular reason.

 

blood is one of the main iconography used in a thriller , it plays a big part , its used to show pain/hurt ,death and danger.

                     

Running water is often a symbol of death as it submits the wearing of life or it can be associated with blood dripping and suggests that the characters are in danger.

Bars on windows are used to show isolation or locked in can’t escape, which links to the conventional thriller.  Fences consisting of razor barbed wire also suggest that the characters are imprisoned and have no way of getting out which shows how they are detached from the outside world and therefore conforms to the convention of isolation in thrillers.

Over all i think iconography used in thrillers are important because they help the audience recognize the little things to give them clues to whats happening the scene.

Production: Audience Feedback: Miss Begum

Audience feedback is when you get a feed back from the audience telling you , either what they liked about our thriller , also audience feedback is significant to a production as it is helps , whether you have appealed to your target audience and created a conventional thriller film. 

Before the filming our thriller film myself and my group had already gained some audience feedback by the questionnaire that we had created.  We created this questionnaire to gain some information on the expectations of our target audience; for example our target audience have chosen the theme ‘psychological’ when asked the question“what type of thriller do you enjoy”,so myself and my group based our theme on psychological as its important to listen to what our audience want in order to be successful. This helped us with the creation of our thriller film because we was able to reach out to our target audience to find out their ideas of a successful thriller film.

The next stage of our audience feedback was through screening our thriller film with our target group. This enabled us to gain feedback from our target audience about what they enjoyed about our thriller giving us positive comments on what we've done well on in terms of conventional a thriller film also gave us constructive comments on what could be improved on. This helped the progress of my thriller film because we could now make changes to our thriller film in order to meet the expectations of our target audience.

POSITIVE COMMENTS

Jessie age 15: “The setting worked well with the idea of the house being safe”

This comment was beneficial because it shows that myself and my group succeed with the idea of a house being safe but within our thriller, being completely the opposite.

Joshua age 16 “There was conventional lighting that was used throughout most scenes”

This comment was also beneficial because it shows that myself and my group followed the conventions of a thriller as we used low key lighting throughout our thriller film, so that a eerie effect was maintained throughout the film.

Tom age 15 “The soundtrack of the film was corresponding with the images on screen.”

This is an important comment as the sound is one of the main elements in making the audience have that thrill experience; the sound is the connection between the film and the audience because with out it, it wouldn't be as effective.

CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS

Sarah age 17 “When the dad hears a nose and goes to check it, looks outside the window and then leaves. Not very good acting, he should have looked at other places too, he didn't seem that scared”

I think that this is a good constructive comment and i think that this change would be beneficial to my thriller film.

Jack age 16 “A wider selection of angles could have been used.”

I think that by providing the audience with a wider range of angles within my thriller film would make the film more strong as they have a larger image of what is happening at every angle of the film.

 Jamal age 15 “ At the beginning where it shows the family moving in , they could of waited for a bit of darkness , as then it didn't look like a thriller film to me.”

This was a good comment to reflect on as we are aware of the impact, however the idea of us using natural lighting was to show the audience its day time, thrill things don’t happen and also to have them a bit confused. Never the less we completely understand where they’re coming from. In future we know not to do that.

From looking at the final outcome of my thriller film, I think that it does follow the brief of creating a two minute conventional thriller film. The micro elements of my thriller film follow the codes and conventions of a thriller by creating affecting responses from the audience and also think that succeed in satisfying our target audience in terms of expectations.  

Overall looking at the audience feedback of our thriller, I think that this will benefit my film company as my target audience will see that I have created a conventional thriller film under ‘The Blum House Of Horrors' and maybe even continue to watch thriller films made by them. The audience feedback was essential to develop our thriller film as we know what needs to be improved and what was successful about our conventional thriller film. As a group we were pleased about the feedback we got , this will help us in future.

Production-Soundtrack of the thriller production- Miss Begum

Soundtracks in thrillers are important because they have a massive effect on the audience as its builds suspense and tension. Without the soundtrack in a thriller, it wouldn't be as scary as it is with the soundtrack therefore to have a good soundtrack is essential in a thriller film. The sound has that scary effect on the audience, is meant to go with the actions on what’s going on in the thriller film building that tension in order to get the audience jumpy having them in fear also sounds in thrillers is meant to create a meaning and understanding for the audience, it will enable the audience to have a response to the film. It creates the right mood and atmosphere and in the context of the thriller genre, also often used to symbolise both the protagonists and antagonists movements in the scene.

Conventional soundtrack in thriller films in normally that creepy sound that builds up slowly from quite gentle to becoming louder and quitter at some point in the film. A sound in thriller films is meant to have the audience on the edge having them in panic.Non-Diegetic soundtracks such as voice-overs can be used to explain an event within the scene that wasn't shown to the audience; this in turn gives the audience a better understanding of what happened/ what is happening. Also it helps to create a suspense filled feeling as the audience are then able to determine what will happen next in the scene e.g. someone is going to die etc.
Diegetic sounds such as the sounds from the TV or a radio allow the audience to understand what is going on in the scene clearer; as it is based upon realistic sounds it makes the scene a lot more intriguing for the audience to watch.

To create the soundtrack to our thriller, my group used the programme ‘Garage Band’. This programme was used because of its extensive range of instruments that allowed us to use and cut apart sounds from. Garage Band was simple to use therefore allowed us to create a successful and conventional soundtrack that combined impeccably with our thriller film.

Myself and my group created that thrill sound, the typical scary sounds you hear in a thriller film, in order for the audience to identify the genre. We got soundtrack ideas from other existing thriller films such as 'sinister' insidious' which helped us to create our sound because they had similar theme to our thriller film. In one of our sounds, it starts of quite calm and then to you hear a screaming, they've seen something scary that made them scream.

The one thing that was effective about my soundtrack was that it was able to make the audience respond in a certain way and have them scared. Also another reason why my soundtrack was effective is because it's a conventional soundtrack as that was what we wanted to achieve.

Overall the soundtrack has help my production because without it my thriller would not be as thrill as it is now. However the impact our soundtrack has had on the audience is that they feel as though they have watched a effective and conventional thriller, and also we've been able to create a sharp feeling of suspense and tension among the audience.I think that myself and my group have made a successful and conventional thriller film that our chosen target audience would enjoy watching and also have that scary effect on them. 

Planning -Storyboading Miss B

Storyboarding before filming is really important as it saves a lot of time therefore before the filming and production of my thriller as a group we each created a drawn storyboard in order to create basic outline of the story line with the same ideas but just having our own copy .This made it easy for me and my group to follow whilst filming. Storyboard before the filming of any film is important as the crew know what micro elements need to be added in specific scenes and which shots follow into each other.

Our storyboard that we were able to come up with , its features include clear images and the micro-elements we will use in our thriller. It is well organized and visibly presented. This will help us when it comes to filming our thriller film as we can easily know what’s going to happen in our thriller and we now know who is needed, when they are needed and where they are needed in each shot.

Creating drawn storyboards has helped me and my group with the preparation of our thriller film. It has also helped us by knowing what micro elements needs to be used in each scenes and gives the production crew a clear understanding of the thriller.

Planning- Preliminary task- Miss B

Before we actually filmed our actual thriller we had to gain some experience to how  to operate the camera , making sure we are familiar with the use of camera . In a group of 3 we were asked to film about 3 minutes of preliminary task , getting as many shots in order for us to cut and edit to make a final piece  Its important for us to create a preliminary task because when we actually film our thriller trailer it wouldn't take long to figure out how to use the camera and also our teacher will see a big improvement as our actual thriller will be shot very well compared to the preliminary task.

We had to come up with a scenario , in my group we didn't really think about it , we just done random shots from different angles etc. We had myself and jemar walk through the corridors and outside( the playground) .

At first in my group we all had the chance to film but then realized Relande should  be the camera operator because he knew how to use the camera and was much better then the rest of us. We all sort of directed it also we let Relande do the editing because we knew he would be much quicker and seemed like he knew what he was doing unlike the rest of us never the less that different stop us from having a go.


During filming myself ,Jemar and Relande did come across some difficulties for example i didn't know how to use the camera at first. When it came to editing we couldn't find some of the our chosen shots that was saved on a USB so we had redo it  and , find the shots we needed. We also found it a bit hard to start editing but eventually we over came that.

From this preliminary task i learned that i should not be the camera operator when it comes to filming our actual thriller however i learned the that when filming it doesn't have to be perfect because then you wouldn't have much to edit and there's a lot u can do with the editing.


Conclusion

Overall doing this preliminary task has helped myself and the rest of my group develop skills and  prepared us for making our actual thriller , we won't waste so much time trying to figure out how to operator the camera or who should do it because now we have a clear idea of who should be taking that role. Moreover our teacher will see the diffidence between the preliminary task and our actual thriller therefore she will see the massive improvement. It also helped us save a lot of  time as we now know how to use a lot of the tools etc.
